Sean has spent over 40 years in hospitality growing up through the ranks to senior Operational and Human Resource roles. The companies he has helped grow by having a strong people & guest service culture include brands such as TGI Fridays, All Bar One, Vintage Inns, Browns Restaurants, Malmaison & Hotel du Vin, The Dorchester, Coworth Park & 45 Park Lane, Principal Hotels, Kimpton & Regent Hotels.
He is an Acorn winner and has achieved numerous ‘best places to work’ accolades, as well as two HR in Hospitality awards for Human Resources & Training, The Catey HRD of the Year and CIPD award for talent management. In 2012 The Dorchester Collection UK won a prestigious Catey award for HR team of the Year and another for Catey Employer of the Year in 2015.
Sean was one of the founders of the Acorn Scholarship, chairs the UK People 1st Employer Accreditation Panel, working with The AA to develop talent of the future in catering colleges across the UK. He is an Ambassador for Hospitality Action supporting Walk for Wellbeing. He also chairs the Thames Valley Positive Support HIV charity across Berkshire and Hampshire and has been involved since 1993 for which he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2019 birthday honours list. In November 2019, Sean was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Hospitality Award at The Hotel Cateys. He was made a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality in February 2021 and now sits on their Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Locally he supports Tom Kerridge’s Meals from Marlow and Bisham Church Friends creating community activities for the villagers to enjoy.
Sean is now running Sean Wheeler Consultancy Ltd focusing on supporting hospitality businesses with their people culture & guest service strategies. To date Sean has worked with private equity investors Starwood Capital supporting the people & service culture of their opening of The Grand Birmingham after a £50 million investment, voted by The Sunday Times as one of the top 20 hotels in the UK 2021, Vega at Yotel Glasgow, Iconic Hotels, which includes Chewton Glen & Cliveden. TGI Fridays and Guest an ultra-luxury travel & experience company.
What do you enjoy about working within HR in the hospitality industry
In all the years I have been in hospitality as an operator then as a People & Culture person, I have loved the variety of opportunities it has given me. Not being particularly academic when at school, I got the buzz from an early age and enjoyed working and having fun while learning. I still have that buzz today. I love the fact through personal drive, hard work, commitment, and some brilliant leaders giving me a chance I have been blessed with a great career and that I am now in a place where I can support and help others develop and grow their careers in such a vibrant and exciting industry.
Why I joined the HR in Hospitality team
I am delighted to be the next President, I know I have big shoes to fill following Jane Sunley, but promise I will do all I can to support and promote HR in Hospitality and all the great things they do and plan to do in the future to help people & culture professionals across the UK deliver a robust plan to deliver the basics, their brand promises and live their values so they attract, develop and retain their people during continued challenging times.
